Isn't ‘New York’ original?

On one side New York is showered with praises for its great performance at the box office, but the makers of the film on the other side are checked over and over again with something or the other. Earlier it was music director Pritam who was accused of plagiarism for the soundtrack Junoon. Now it is the Aditya Chopra himself under the magnifying glass.

A young writer named Suchita Bhhatia has alleged that the story of ‘New York’ was her idea. She claims to have approached Aditya Chopra with the idea who in turn asked Arjun Sablok to get in touch with Suchita. She had narrated the story to Sablok and was appreciated for it in September 2006. She has now registered a complaint with Writers Association and written to Mr. Sablok and Aditya Chopra. However she hasn’t received any response from either of them.

On asked about the matter, Vice President Marketing & Communications Yash Raj Films, Rafiq Gangjee said: “It is unfortunate that this issue should come up after the film has released when the promotions for the same have been there since 12th Dec 2008 where the very same plot was clearly outlined. If she has been truly aggrieved it would have been well within her rights to have raised this issue over the past several months. To be raising this issue now can only be termed as opportunistic. As is well known, for a company like Yash Raj Films, which has been known to give breaks to a large number of budding writers and directors, there is absolutely no reason for us to resort to something like this. “
