Amrita Rao

Amrita was born in the Rao family on June 7, 1981 in Mumbai, She speaks Konkani. She comes from a well to do Hindu family. Her dad owns an Advertising Agency.Amrita did not want to purse any career with Bollywood as she wanted to graduate in psychology, which she eventually did.No stranger to cameras and bright lights, she has modeled for approximately 35 advertisements. Her first assignment was for Fairever Face Cream. Amongst other assignments that got her noticed were Hindustan Lever’s ’Close-up’ Cadbury’s Perk, & Nestle Bru Coffee. Ken Ghosh approached Amrita for his debut movie Ishq Vishq after seeing her in the perk commercial, where she plays a hungry bride eagerly awaiting the arrival of her husband on the religious occasion of ’Karva Chauth’. Ishq Vishq was a world-wide hit and made her famous virtually overnight. Amrita Rao is also a Brand Ambassador for D’Damas Gold Jewellery, Parachute Hair Oil, and Miss Players Apparels.Having modeled for nearly 35 ads, her decision to act in films didn’t come as a surprise. What came as a surprise was that unlike other models who dropped out of college to pursue their careers, Amrita Rao preferred to thumb down film offers to complete her graduation in psychology. And she has a word of advise for all those aspiring to make it big in this profession. "Don’t be disillusioned and depressed if you don’t get a worthy opportunity here. There are other fields you can excel in!" Her first modeling assignment was for a fairness cream. "When I was told I would have to audition for it, I said, "Audition?" The word itself made me feel jittery. Thankfully I was not camera conscious. The little bit of acting that I did after reading the storyboard appealed to them. I got through it successfully," she laughs. But it was the Close-up toothpaste ad that made her a familiar face in the ad world. If the Close-up ad fetched her recognition, the Cadbury’s Perk ad offered her platform to step into films. "You know Perk and Liril are two brands that get you noticed as a model. The girl always stands out in the ads," she says. Perk had the beautiful but hungry Amrita dressed in bridal attire eagerly waiting for the moon to be seen, but even before it appears her hubby hands her a perk that has a smiling with delight. "Raj Kanwar saw that ad and got touch with me. He told me about Ab Ke Baras and how it was Arya Babbar’s launch vehicle and that I was perfect to play the lead opposite him in the film." Farah Khan’s Main Hoon Na is another film she is excited about. She is playing a college girl absolute contrast to the one she played in Ishq Vishk Pyaar Vyaar. Farah gave her a new hair style. She is wearing lot of trendy and western stuff. Her other co stars are Shah Rukh Khan, Susmita Sen and Zayed Khan. She is very exicited working with shahrukh. And the third film is Gaurang Doshi’s Deewar- Let’s Bring Our Heroes Home is completely male dominating film and she have little to do in it. It is based on an English Film. It’s a prestigious project and she is their for it only.Besides these 3 films Amrita have not signed any other film. She wants to gauge the audiences reaction to her three films before signing any new project. She want to win the race slowly and steadily. She feels every character she plays has been a sort of professional journey. She want to be a actress then an entertainer that’s why she don’t want to be in item numbers where audience only notice her hairstyle, lipstick, costume not her inner talent and performance.Amrita likes to chill out at home in spare time. She is a complete home bird. She hates going to discos the blaring volume of music puts her off. She is a food freak. She likes coconut curry and rice.

Facts:
*Daughter of Deepak Rao
*Comes from a very well-to-do Saraswat Brahmin family
*Has an identical twin sister
*she became popular through ads and she did 30 commercials before coming to films.
*Philosophy of life: Life is short and sweet, so make others happy and never let anyone down.

*Bowled by the Amrita’s look in Sooraj Barjatya film Vivah, M F Hussain has plans to start a series of paintings inspired by Vivah and Amrita Rao.

Sushmita Sen

In 1994, at the age of eighteen, Sushmita won the title of Miss India narrowly beating out Aishwarya Rai, who was the favorite to win the contest. Twenty-two girls took their application out from the contest once they got to learn that model Aishwarya Rai was participating for Miss India. Sushmita Sen was one of them but her mother gave her the courage to face the challenge. Interestingly, Aishwarya Rai won every title in the preliminary round. Ironically, both Sen and Rai were actually tied for the title. It was with a tie-breaking question that got Sen the chance to represent India at the Miss Universe Pageant, held in Manila, Philippines. At Miss Universe, Sushmita ranked third overall in the preliminaries, right behind preliminary winner Miss Colombia Carolina Gomez, and Miss Greece Rea Totounzi, who ranked second but won the preliminary swimsuit and evening gown competitions. Sushmita went on to place second, fifth and third respectively in the swimsuit, interview and evening gown competitions, placing her in third place behind Miss Colombia and Miss Venezuela Minorka Mercado. All three women went on to be the final three contestants. In the end, the judges placed their votes on Sushmita, making her the first woman from India to become Miss Universe.Sushmita’s supposed rival at the Miss India pageant, Aishwarya Rai, went on to win the 1994 Miss World contest.

Sushmita Sen As Best Supporting Actress
Sushmita spent the next few years appearing in a host of forgettable efforts, and it wasn’t until 1999’s Biwi No. 1 that she finally began to live up to her promise. The film, a traditional romantic comedy, wound up taking the box office by storm, and brought Sushmita a truckload of awards and kudos. She won the Indian equivalent of an Oscar for best supporting actress the following year for her performance. It was also around
that time that Sushmita decided to adopt a child, a choice that stemmed from her time as Miss India. “I saw so many poor children… I wanted to adopt a girl child. It took me years to get one." Sushmita decided to name the baby Renee after her mother’s store in Dubai, and though the adoption raised some eyebrows in India, the actress has since admitted that she holds no regrets about her decision.More controversy followed when Sushmita began dating a married man, Bollywood filmmaker Vikram Bhatt, although that relationship didn’t last terribly long. For now, Sushmita seems to be focused solely on her daughter and her career -- with the latter hotter than ever (Sushmita appeared in almost two dozen films between 2000 and 2006). A foray into the North American market is inevitable, and it seems likely that she’ll soon be as well-known as her former Miss India competitor Aishwarya Rai.

Shilpa Shetty

Sued Stardust India magazine because the magazine produced a report about her on-off relationship with Akhsay Kumar. According to her opinion, the article made her name disgraced and she lost some offers on films. She won the lawsuit. [2000]
Indian top model
Captain of her school’s baseball team. She is also a black-belt karate champion.
Won Best Supporting Actress for Pardesi Babu (1998) at the Zee Gold Bollywood Awards.
Sahara One crowned her the 2004 DIVA of the year.
Shilpa and Shamita are the first sisters to appear in a film together in the history of Bollywood.
Shilpa is considered to have the best body in Bollywood.
AIDS activist and PETA supporter.
Her appearance on "Celebrity Big Brother" (2001) caused a huge racism and bullying row. As several house mates didn’t approve her presence, they made fun of her accent, cooking and her native country. Following these incidents, broadcasting network Channel 4 received over a record-breaking 40,000 complaints, and the controversy developed to a diplomatic crisis between the UK and India. Even Prime Minister Tony Blair and Chanchellor Gordon Brown, while visiting India, condemned these acts of unfairness and intolerance (January 2007).
Beside her native language Tulu, she speaks English, Hindi, Kannada, Marathi, Gujarati, Telugu, Tamil and Urdu.
Shilpa’s cousin - Prem Shetty - was credited with a ’Special Thanks’ on the acclaimed Indian art house film entitled ’The Last Monk’ which premiered at the Cannes Film Festival 2006.
Winner of "Celebrity Big Brother" (2001), series 5.
Her movie Phir Milenge was viewed by the United Nations who appreciated the movie for its support of AIDS awareness.
Received critical acclaim and nominations for her performances in movies like: Baazigar, Dhadkan, Rishtey and Phir Milenge.
She donated all the money she made from her movie ’Phir Milenge’ to an AIDS charity.

Richard Gere Kissing Incident

Shetty was kissed several times in jest on the cheek by Richard Gere during an AIDS-awareness event. The pair had appeared at a press conference in New Delhi as part of a campaign to preach safe sex to truck drivers in India and promotion of AIDS awareness. The kiss prompted protesters, allegedly members of the right-wing Hindu nationalist group Shiv Sena, to beat burning effigies of Gere with sticks. Others set fire to glamour shots of Shetty. People demanded an apology from her and threatened to ban her movies in the state. Shiv Sena leaders denied involvement in the protests, but Shiv Sena member of parliament Sanjay Raut observed that that protests are "just a manifestation of the anger of the general public" and that there was "nothing wrong with expressing contempt at such an act"
Similar protests broke out in other cities, including Varanasi, Hinduism’s holiest city, and in the northern town of Meerut, where crowds of hundreds of thousands chanted "Down with Shilpa Shetty!" Star News Office was also attacked. The protests did not take any violent turn and the situation was quickly brought under control with some activists being detained.
Shetty responded to these protests by saying "I understand this (kissing) is his (Gere’s) culture, not ours. But this was not such a big thing or so obscene for people to overreact in such a manner. I understand people’s sentiments, but I don’t want a foreigner to take bad memories from here."
On April 26, 2007 an Indian court in Rajasthan issued a warrant for Shetty and Gere’s arrest.Shetty said she would attend court if her lawyers advised her to and that she felt the magistrates were seeking fame at her expense.

Celebrity Big Brother 2007

Shetty was a contestant in and the winner of Celebrity Big Brother UK. and is the first Indian celebrity included in the Celebrity version. Reportedly paid Rs.31.5m (£367,500 GBP) for her participation, she said to presenter Davina McCall, "I just want every Indian to be extremely proud that I’m in here". As for her participation, she stated: "I have zero expectations. The only thing I really hope to keep is my self-respect and my dignity." Sister Shamita told the Times of India that this "is the boldest decision Shilpa has taken hitherto." The Scotsman reported that PETA backed Shetty to win the contest and urged British viewers to vote for her.
During her time, Shetty instructed fellow housemates Carole Malone and Ken Russell in meditation, flirted with Dirk Benedict but tempers started to fray by Day 7 as a clique formed in the house disapproving of Shilpa’s presence. Following a worldwide controversy that publicised her as a target of racist bullying (see below) within the house, Shetty won the contest after gaining 63% of the public vote and described the experience as "incredible and overwhelming". She further thanked the public for "a fantastic opportunity to make my country proud".

Shah Rukh Khan

Full Name: Shah Rukh Khan
Date of Birth: 2nd of November, 1965
Origin: Born into a Muslim family of Pathan origin in New Delhi, India
Place of Birth: Talwar Nursing Home (Rajinder Nagar) in New Delhi, India
Biological Mother: Fatima Begum (a social worker and a first class magistrate, who died of complications from diabetes in 1991)
Biological Father: Mir Taj Mohammed (a lawyer and a freedom fighter, who died of cancer in 1981)

Kids: Son named Aryan (born on the 13th of November, 1997) & daughter named Suhana (born on 22nd of May 2000 at Mumbai’s Breach Candy hospital in Mumbai)

One of the biggest Bollywood heartthrobs of the past decade, Shah Rukh Khan is the son of a renowned freedom fighter. Khan took an interest in theater while in high school and began performing in plays soon after graduation. He soon got work in television, and starred in a number of popular series before making the leap into feature films with Deewana, which was the first in a string of blockbusters that established him as one of India’s most bankable stars. After starring in many films throughout the 1990s, Khan began branching out into other aspects of the movie industry, starting his own production company to produce Santosh Sivan’s Asoka, in which Khan played the title role, among other films.
The year is 1991. First-time director Hema Malini looks anxious on the sets of her directorial debut, ’Dil Aashna Hai’. The cause of her anxiety triggers laughter as it is discovered that the lady, despite employing all haircut methods on her boyish-looking hero Shahrukh Khan, remains unsuccessful with his unruly mop. Hema finally lets go of the boy and his effervescent hair without a crop. The film bungled at the box office. Was it due to Khan’s boisterous hair?Today, in retrospect, it looks like it was his disheveled hair, big nose, average height and average looks that broke conventions to give birth to a new-age star.SRK’s USP were his energy, fizz and ’dreamz unlimited’. The boy just refuses to sit idle. Says Juhi co-star and friend: ’’Shahrukh went on even when others stopped due to exhaustion. He breathes films. He is down-to-earth, without an attitude. He is very friendly and has a funny sense of humor’’.When Colonel Kapoor signed SRK for his serial on faujis, he knew the potential of the bubbly youth but the amazing career he would charter wasn’t probably envisaged. After Fauji, a couple of more television serials and Shahrukh joined the big league and gave a smashing hit Deewana with the late Divya Bharati. As compared to the superstars of yesteryears, Shahrukh’s ride up the ladder was tougher. He had to face the rage of explosion of information and technology while working towards super-stardom. He was required to possess charisma compelling enough to make people rise above the zillion modes of entertainment and be his audience. Shahrukh managed to captivate and the feat, by no means, was easy.

Her father, Ram, is a movie director, and other members of her extended family are also successful actors and actresses in the Indian film industry, including her cousin Kajol, another of the country’s top actresses. She moved from Juhu to India’s film capital, Mumbai, shortly after graduating from Maneckjee Cooper High School, to break into Bollywood cinema. While in school at the age of 14, Mukerji did a cameo role in her father’s Bengali film Biyar Phool (1992). In 1994, Salim Akhtar, a family friend, offered her a film called Aa Gale Lag Jaa (1994) but her father was against it as she was too young. Mukerji turned down the offer and Urmila Matondkar was cast instead. Two years later, Salim Akhtar came up with another offer and insisted on her playing the protagonist of Raja Ki Ayegi Baraat (1997). After a long discussion with her father, she agreed to do the film. When the film was unsuccessful at the box office, Mukerji returned to college to complete her education. She changed the English transliteration of her surname from Mukherjee to Mukerji several years ago. At the time, it was reported that she did this for numerological reasons. Recently, she has claimed that numerology was not a concern; her name had been put down as Mukerji on her passport, and she wished to harmonize her name and her passport. She is the first actor to ever win both the Best Actress and Best Supporting Actress trophies in a single year (2005) at the Filmfare. Two movies in which she appeared have been India’s entry to the Academy Awards.
