Asin is making Bollywood's queens uncomfortable

Southern superstar Asin is making Bollywood’s queens uncomfortable. She has been a sensation in the Tamil industry, but so far has had very little exposure to the media in the North. And what worries the stars of Bollywood is how she will explode into the imagination if Ghajini becomes a hit.

The fact is that the Tamil version of the movie was a hit in large part because of Asin, according to Aamir Khan. "Asin is the best and I think if you watched the Tamil version of Ghajini she is the one who is in limelight," said Aamir, "her acting is damn good. I think it’s because of Asin that Ghajini became such a hit."

So will she be a threat to reigning Bollywood hotties Kareena, Priyanka and Katrina? They fear she will. At only 23, Asin is a sensation down South. She is not only a combination of a gorgeous face, silky long tresses and a curvy figure; she is a powerhouse performer as well, having won several Filmfare awards down South. Most Bollywood actresses can barely manage to speak two languages. Katrina’s Hindi is highly accented. But Asin speaks English, French, Telugu, Malayalam, Sanskrit, Tamil and Hindi. So, Miss Multilingual has a wider geographic appeal, and she will also have broader appeal of mindset, because most actresses think only geeks read.

Her Bollywood debut is one that most actresses would kill for. Kareena has been in the industry for 10 years but is doing her first film (3 Idiots) with Aamir only now. Katrina and Priyanka haven’t done even one yet.

That’s not all, Asin is following up her Ghajini debut with London Dreams which has Salman, but more importantly is being made with the man who has the golden touch: Vipul Shah. Shah has transformed Akshay Kumar from being an ordinary Bollywood hero to a superstar through his films. He can be expected to work the same magic with Asin as well. Asin’s other threat to them comes from the fact that, unlike Katrina for instance, she can really act. She is as good an actress as can be found anywhere in India. That will endear her to audiences in the North, who have been starved of actresses who appeal to them after Rani Mukherji and Preity Zinta dropped off the radar. The media has sensed Asin’s quality and she made the cover of Vogue even before the release of her Hindi debut film.

One actress immediately threatened by Asin is Jiah Khan as she has been relegated to the background for the promotion of Ghajini. Aamir likes Asin so much that he is promoting her aggressively. Very few actresses have the privilege of being recommended by Aamir Khan and entering his selective camp. Asin’s career has had a flying start in Bollywood and things will only get better from here on. Should B-town hotties be intimated by this formidable Southern beauty? We think so.
