Smelling ginormous business opportunity for visually spectacular films in India, Fox Star Studios India decided to release James Cameron’s magnum opus Avatar in a big way, with a whopping 700 prints in English, Hindi, Telugu and Tamil on the 18th. Their estimations came true, when, by the weekend, the film reportedly grossed an unimaginable Rs. 22 cr. for a Hollywood film in the country. Latest reports indicate that the film has collected Rs. 40 cr. by the day before Christmas. No surprise, given the fact that the film has collected Rs. 1,900 cr. around the world in its first week.

The science-fiction wonder, overtaking even the apocalyptic giant film 2012, scorched the Indian movie market for well over a week in four languages, despite the presence of many much-awaited films in the fray, like Paa, 3 Idiots, Rocket Singh in Hindi and many more regional films.

If the film is a wonder, it’s box office performance is an equally wonderful opportunity for the exhibitors and buyers of Hollywood bonanzas. The film, while throwing up a hint that the audience are ready to patronise visual flourish, also tells that along with Bollywood, Tollywood, Kollywood and Mollywood (Kerala), Hollywood business is something to reckon with from this year. Two films, 2012 and this, opening to flabbergasting run in multiplexes and single-screen theatres, is one of the finest factoids of year 2009.

Sari-clad cheerleaders will perform for first time in cricket match

Sari-clad cheerleaders will perform for the first time during the day and night one-day international cricket match between India and Sri Lanka Dec 21 at Barabati Stadium in Cuttack.

The cheerleaders will wear Sambalpuri saris -- the oldest form of the tie-and-dye handwoven textile -- and perform whenever a boundary is hit or a wicket falls, Orissa Cricket Association (OCA) secretary Ashirbad Behera told IANS.

’At least 15 Oriya girls between 18 and 20 would be selected for the purpose. They will be placed in three different parts of the stadium,’ he said.

’The girls will not wear short skirts as has been done in many other places because it would be against our culture and tradition. Our audience will not accept it. They will have modest traditional attire. They will be dressed as per our tradition and culture.’

OCA has already placed an order to buy the saris from a state cooperative body, Behera added.

Music from superhit Oriya films or albums would be played in the background when the girls perform, he said.

OCA had thought of introducing similarly-clad cheerleaders during the day-night ODI between India and England Nov 26 last year, but it cancelled the plan saying that it did not have adequate time to organise it.

Cricket first saw cheerleaders when business tycoon Vijay Mallya’s IPL (Indian Premier League) team took the field in Twenty20 IPL championship last year.

The latest match will be the 16th day-night international to be played in Barabati, some 26 km from the state capital here. OCA has already begun preparations.

Behera said the stadium authorities are increasing the seating capacity from 35,000 to 45,000.

’For the first time, we are also creating an air-conditioned corporate box where at least 800 people can be accommodated,’ he said.

The players, match referees and officials would stay at hotel Mayfair Lagoon in Bhubaneswar. ’We have already booked the hotel,’ he said.

Behera said a reception committee has been formed to look after all arrangements. The committee will soon meet Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik and seek his help to provide adequate security for the match, he said.

Legendary Canadian director james Cameron has announced plans for his movie scienc 1997,s Oscar-winning epic Titanic, film trade press has reported.

Cameron will return with a 200-million-dollar science fiction film title Avatar , which tells the story of a band of humans locked in a battle with inhabitans of a distant planet.

The 52-year-old director said he had conceived the project 11 years ago but had been waiting for technological advancements that will enable him to bring his vision to the big screen.

''I've wanted to do it science then, but sort of shoved it in the back of the pic,'' Cameron told Daily Variet on Tuesday. The project was given the green light by fox studios earlier this week.

The movie is due for releas in 2009, 12year after Titanic, one of the most expensive and successful films in the history of cinema. The film grossed $1.8 billon at the box office and bagged 11 Oscars.

Cameron will work closely with New Zealand Lord of the rings director peter jakson on the project, Variety reported.

Cameron had been reported to be preparing another science fiction film ,Battle Angel, but plans for the movie have taken a backseat to work on Avatar, Variety said.
